It is ok to use a soft case, but it is much better to use a hard case. Soft is better than nothing. Soft cases are much less expensive, so what I would do is buy a soft case and then save up some more money and get a hard case. Gig bags are only really for carrying the guitars, not so much protecting them. They'll stop the guitar from getting scratched but if you drop it then it won't do half as much as a hard case will. Obviously hard cases aren't invincible but they'll protect your guitar more. If you're transporting them by car or even plane and the guitar is expensive, I'd definitely recommend a hard case.
A gig bag is OK if you need something to store your guitar in at home to keep it from getting dusty, as long as you have someplace safe to keep it at home where it won't get accidentally knocked over, and if you need a lightweight way to carry your guitar back and forth to school. Its also OK if you're traveling by car and taking your guitar, as long as you put it in the back seat, NOT in the trunk.
But if you're going to be doing any serious traveling, where you can't keep your guitar with you at all times -- like on a plane or train where you have to put it in the luggage compartment -- a good hard case (not cardboard!) is a must. But of course a REALLY good hard case can cost as much or more than your Yamaha guitar!
If you decide to get a gigbag, make sure you get a good quality one with lots of padding, secure fastenings, and sturdy shoulder straps:

yeah its okay to use it if your super careful, but if you want to not worry and know its alright, get a hardcase
